FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
    Joining
  • How much does it cost?
This is an informal group, so it's free. If you carpool with someone or if someone brings stuff to share with anyone who shows up, pitch in a few bucks to help cover the costs.
  • How do I join?
Simply subscribe to the email list. Click here, add your name and email then make up a password. When it comes back, it should send you an email invite to the email account given.
    The Website
  • What's my pasword?
I don't know, but the system does. Take a guess and one of three things will happen. 1) It will work, 2) It won't and provide you a link to have it sent to your email, or 3) your email isn't in the system, in which case, sign up here
  • How do I get the website to remember my settings?
Be sure that you are signed in as a user. Go to the Calendar and select your usual settings and click 'Go'. When the page comes back with your filtered settings, you can click the 'Save Settings' link to preserve your choices for next time. Note that the latest news, and Upcoming sections are also filtered on your choice.
  • I want to email someone, but I can't view their profile?
You need to be signed in as a user to view other people's accounts. Click here to log in or here sign up. If you're looking at a race, then the race's website should provide you with the contact info you're looking for.
  • When I view my account, the info is wrong?
The account info doesn't need much info. Name and email is the minimum. If you'd like to add more info or correct what's there, view your own profile and then click on Edit Account' in the left menu bar.
  • I have a great story that I'd like to share, how do I post it?
Write up the story and email it to the admin. If you write it up in html format, I'm sure they'd appreciate it.
  • Why don't you guys have a team finder?
There are lots of sites out there that have fantastic team finder features. Check out Full Moon in June's team finder or Frontier Adventure Racing's team finder If you still can't find someone to race with, don't be afraid to email the group.
    Activities
  • I'm going out for some training, how do I post it on the schedule?
Be sure that you have an account on the website and then email the Account Admin to request to become a facilitator [It's really quick]. From there, log in and click 'Add Event', add some details and you're set.
  • There's nothing going on in my area?
Chances are that there aren't many people signed up in your area. Or it might be that those who are, are a bit shy. Go out for your usual training sessions and post them on the calendar. If people can make it: great, if not, no worries, you were going anyways, no? Do it a few times and you'll get a response.
  • What equipment do I need?
It's usually best to bring too much and leave what you don't need in the car. If you really don't know what to bring ask some friends.
  • I see an activity that looks neat, how do I keep abreast of changes?
The best way is to go to the activity detail page and click the subscribe option. This puts your nam eon a short list that the facilitator can use to inform them of their plans. Even if you probably can't make it, it's always nice to hear what's going on with these events, so if in doubt, add your name.
    Adventure Racing
  • What is Adventure Racing?
Adventure racing is a sport that asks a team of people to navigate their way through a course using foot, bike and boat travel. The team must complete the events together and they must complete the challenges in the order set out
  • I don't really want to race, should I still sign up?
Adventure racing is really just an outlet for people to enjoy the outdoors. If you like to go hiking or biking, but are finding it hard to get people to go with you, then send out an email. There's lots of people who are eager to go, but just can't find someone else to go with them
  • I'd like to race, but how do I find teammates?
If you're planning to race with someone for 6 hrs or 6 days, you'll want to be sure that they won't drive you bonkers. To that end, the best thing to do is to get out on a few outings and meet some people. Find some friends that you enjoy hiking with and then ask them. If you still can't find people, try Full Moon in June's team finder or Frontier Adventure Racing's team finder
  • How will I know that I'm ready?
Nothing is guaranteed in an adventure race, but to have the best chance at finishing, you'll need strong navigation, resilient legs and a dogged amount of preparation. Get out and practice hiking around using only a map and compass. Practice hiking for extended periods of time. And start preparing early for the race by going over the mandatory gear and any possible contingency gear. Better to pack too much and leave it in the support vehicle than to be wishing you had brought something. no?
  • What types of races are out there?
There's quite a spectrum. Traditionally defined adventure racing involves 4 person, coed teams in a non-stop format. There are different durations for these, such as Valhalla Pure's 6 hr to the Full Moon in June (FMIJ) or Raid The North (RTN) 36 hr race. If getting four people together is proving tricky, Valhalla offers 2 person or even solo categories while races such as Race The Rockies (RTR) offer 3 person races. There are even city races such as Inner Limits in Calgary that tout being able to stop for a Slurpee during the race. There are other races that are just one discipline that are just as adventurous such as the Canadian Death Race in Grande Cache, the Navigation Marathon in Saskatoon and the Muffaloose in Fort McMurray.
Travelling in the outdoors does constitute risk that each participant takes on as his or her own responsibility. Please come prepared to any event. Neither the group nor the facilitators assumes any liability for your participation. In short, you are responsible for keeping yourself safe.
